FAQs
What is Invisalign™?
Invisalign™ is a cosmetic dental treatment that can conveniently and discreetly straighten teeth. Using a series of clear aligners that are worn for 22 hours a day, teeth are gently and gradually guided into place until they reach their desired position.
Because Invisalign™ is virtually invisible, and the aligners can be taken out to eat, and brush your teeth and for special occasions, it’s a popular treatment for patients who are after a flexible, hygienic and attractive teeth straightening solution.
What Can Invisalign™ Treatment Fix?
Invisalign™ can be a great option in your cosmetic treatment plan, but it isn’t suitable for everyone. For those looking to straighten crooked teeth and improve their smile, Invisalign™ is a popular choice.
It is also effective for addressing overbites and other malocclusions. Additionally, clear aligners can help with crowded teeth and close gaps.
However, more complex or severe dental issues might require alternative or more advanced treatment options. That’s why it’s important to have a thorough consultation with a dentist who can assess your suitability and advise you on the most effective solution for your unique needs.
Invisalign™ may be a good treatment, if you have:
- Crooked teeth.
- Missing teeth or spacing.
- Crossbite.
- Overbite.
- Underbite.
- Gummy smile.
- Narrow smile.
While Invisalign™ is a great solution for aligning your teeth, it does not address the individual appearance of your teeth. For this type of treatment, we may look to recommend a whitening or porcelain veneers procedure. For all cosmetic dentistry, we recommend a consultation with our cosmetic dental experts.
What Are the Benefits of Invisalign™?
There can be many benefits to choosing Invisalign™ for your cosmetic treatment plan.
All-round Comfort: During the first two weeks when you first wear your new set of aligners, you can expect to feel a slight tension as your teeth start to shift. However, most people find the discomfort tolerable and that it tends to subside within 24 hours. Because Invisalign™ doesn’t have the brackets and wires of traditional braces, many Invisalign™ wearers find their treatment quite comfortable in comparison.
Virtually Invisible: Invisalign™ is an attractive solution that extends its benefits beyond physical comfort. Because your Invisalign™ trays are clear and discreet, it can be virtually impossible to tell that you’re undergoing treatment. This is especially appealing for our adult patients who may not want the stigma of wearing conventional braces. The aligners can also be removed for special occasions such as weddings or important work events.
Hygienic: While conventional braces require the wearer to restrict certain foods and can be troublesome to clean, Invisalign™ has the convenience of being removable. This means you can eat and drink whatever you like. So no need to worry about sacrificing that morning Coffee, we’ve got the fix for you. After your meal simply brush the trays and pop them back in. Because the wire in traditional braces can attract bacteria, straightening your teeth with Invisalign™ can be a more hygienic option, as your risk of complications from build-up is significantly reduced.
A Straighter Smile: By wearing your clear aligners 20 to 22 hours a day, you’ll see amazing results. Invisalign™ can fix overbites, underbites, crossbites, gaps, open bites, crooked teeth, and crowding—giving you a smile that’s both stunning and aligned!
How Much Does Invisalign™ Melbourne Cost?
If Invisalign™ is the right treatment option for you, we will discuss costs, and provide you with a tailored treatment plan detailing all fees. As well as being completely transparent, we have a variety of flexible payment options to suit different budgets.
Will I Experience Any Pain with Invisalign™?
Invisalign™ typically causes minimal discomfort. You may feel some soreness from the pressure as your teeth shift, but this usually lasts only a few days with each new set of aligners. Drinking cold water or using over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease any temporary discomfort.
Overall, Invisalign™ is more comfortable than traditional braces. The smooth, custom-fitted aligners reduce irritation compared to metal braces. Any mild discomfort when switching aligners is normal and indicates that the treatment is working. Most people find Invisalign™ to be a convenient and comfortable option, often forgetting they’re wearing the aligners after a short adjustment period.
Can Invisalign™ Damage My Teeth?
Invisalign™ is a safe and effective treatment designed to gently align your teeth. When used according to your dentist’s instructions, it should not damage healthy teeth. The treatment is carefully planned by a team of experts to ensure predictable results and optimal patient satisfaction.
In very rare cases, patients may experience allergic reactions to the plastic material of the aligners, which could make them unsuitable candidates for Invisalign™. If you have any concerns or questions about Invisalign™ or other cosmetic dental procedures, please contact our team at Bond Street.
Can You Sleep Wearing Invisalign™?
Yes, you can sleep with Invisalign™ aligners. In fact, it’s recommended to wear them for 20-22 hours a day, including while you sleep, to ensure the best results. Wearing the aligners overnight helps maintain continuous pressure on your teeth, supporting the gradual alignment process.
How Long Does an Invisalign™ Treatment Take?
Following a consultation with one of our cosmetic dentists, you’ll receive a detailed treatment plan. This plan will provide an estimated timeframe for your treatment, including any preliminary dental work needed before starting Invisalign™.
Generally, Invisalign™ treatment lasts up to 18 months.
Will Invisalign™ Affect My Diet?
Invisalign™ trays offer the flexibility to enjoy your favourite foods as long as you follow some important rules. You should remove the aligners before eating or drinking anything other than water.
Eating with the aligners in can lead to staining and tooth decay, as food and drink may get trapped in the aligners. Additionally, the aligners can break or develop holes if you eat while wearing them. After meals, it is also important to brush your teeth. This prevents food particles from getting trapped between your teeth and gums, which helps keep your aligners clean, avoiding stains and bacteria buildup.
What Are Invisalign™ Chewies?
To ensure a proper fit and effective treatment, Invisalign™ chewies can be used. These soft plastic cylinders help remove any gaps between your teeth and the aligners, ensuring a snug fit and helping the aligners work as intended.
How to Clean Invisalign™?
Clean your Invisalign™ aligners every night by rinsing them with water and brushing with a soft-bristled toothbrush using gentle liquid soap or regular toothpaste. Rinse thoroughly and avoid using the same brush as used for your teeth. Specialised cleaning products are available at pharmacies, our staff can recommend suitable options.
Do I Need to Wear a Retainer After Invisalign™ Treatment?
Yes, wearing a retainer after finishing your Invisalign™ treatment is essential to prevent your teeth from shifting back to their original positions.
You will need to use the retainer nightly for about 9 to 12 months to allow your teeth to stabilise in their new positions. After this period, you may only need to wear the retainer a few nights a week. For long-term stability, we recommend continued retainer use throughout your life, even if it’s just once or twice a week.
Is There an Age Limit for Invisalign™?
There is no specific age limit for Invisalign™. If you desire straighter teeth and are between 8 to 80 years old you may be suitable for clear aligners.
Invisalign™ for Kids: Invisalign™ is generally not recommended for children under 7, as their jaws are still growing and changing. It is more commonly used for teens and older children who can commit to wearing the aligners for at least 22 hours a day. Treatment is not advised if baby teeth are still present or if the jaw is not developing properly; in such cases, alternative treatments may be suggested.
Invisalign™ for Adults: The virtually invisible aligners are ideal for adults who want orthodontic treatment without drawing attention. Being removable, they provide a flexible and convenient alternative to traditional fixed braces. Additionally, with shorter appointment times and fewer checkups, Invisalign™ aligners fit well into a busy adult lifestyle.
